Comstock Act

In 1873, the US Congress passed the Comstock Act, which banned the mailing of "indecent, lewd and/or lascivious" materials, including books and pamphlets containing information about contraception and abortion.

The Comstock Act, along with other similar laws passed in 24 states came at a time when anyone who advocated sexual relationships outside of marriage were subject to arrest and imprisonment.    However, the Comstock laws persisted in the United States well into the late 20th Century.
