AIDS Dementia Complex

also known as HIV dementia, HIV encephalopathy and HIV-associated dementia

Approximately 20% of HIV and AIDS patients suffer from AIDS Dementia Complex.

A simple explanation: HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, in addition to disruption the immune system, also infects parts of the brain and neurological systems. The results range from diminished capacity with regard to cognitive function (slower thinking) to delirium. Advanced stages of AIDS Dementia Complex render the patient in a vegetative state with little or no control over bodily functions.
